About the Authors: Joan Barnes, Founder, Gymboree Joan Barnes is an entrepreneur who built two consumer companies from the ground up. She founded and served as CEO of Gymboree, an international network of franchised play programs and company-owned retail stores. In 1993, Gymboree enjoyed one of the most successful consumer IPOs of the decade. Later, in 2010, Bain Capital took Gymboree private for .8 billion. Ms. Barnes was the principal owner of San Francisco-based YogaStudio for over a decade, pioneering "yoga lifestyle" in the mainstream. Her yoga business was acquired in late 2008 by Yoga Works, a chain of nearly 30 yoga studios, which in turn was sold in 2014 for million. She also founded Begin from Within through the Jewish Family and Children's Services of San Francisco, which features programs dedicated to people with food, weight, and body image issues. A native of suburban Chicago, Ms. Barnes received a B.A. in dance and English from Briarcliff College in Briarcliff Manor, New York. She is the mother of two grown daughters and grandmother of two granddaughters and one grandson. Michael Coffino, Writer and co-author of Play it Forward Before launching his writing career, Michael Coffino spent 36 years as a successful business litigator, trial attorney, writing coach, and mentor to young attorneys. During his legal career, he was a trusted advisor to CEOs, boards of directors, and general counsels of public companies. He also coached youth and high school basketball for 24 years. Born and raised in the Bronx, Michael earned a BS in Education from the City University of New York and a JD from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. About the Panelists: Mark Breitbard, Chief Executive Officer, Gymboree Mr. Breitbard is the Chief Executive Officer of Gymboree. He joined the Company in January 2013 from Gap where he most recently served as President of Gap North America, and previously as Executive Vice President of GapKids and babyGap from 2010 until 2011. From 2009 until 2010, Mr. Breitbard served as Chief Merchandising & Creative Officer of its Old Navy brand. Mr. Breitbard joined Gap from Levi Strauss & Co., where he served as President of the Retail Division from 2007 until 2009 and was responsible for all aspects of its retail division, including design, merchandising, marketing, stores and e-commerce. Mr. Breitbard graduated from Vassar College and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Christine Bronstein, Founder, Nothing But The Truth Publishing Christine Bronstein is the founder of Nothing But The Truth Publishing, an independent publishing house specializing in works by diverse female authors. She is also the author of the popular Stewie BOOM! children's book series. In 2009, she started A Band of Women, a social network and information website for women. Chris's writing has been published on Forbes.com, the San Francisco Chronicle, Huffington Post, and on Maria Shriver's website. She has been featured in Elle, 7x7 Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle. Lily Katner, Co-founder, Serena & Lily Lily Kanter, co-founder of Serena & Lily a lifestyle brand based in Sausalito, CA has 27 years of experience in the business and technology fields and has held management positions for Microsoft, Deloitte & Touche, and IBM. She created the first Microsoft flagship earning her the Chairman's Award from Bill Gates in July 1999. Lily left Microsoft in late 2000 to start a family and focus her time and energy on philanthropic causes. Lily was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in July 2000 as part of the cover story "The New Philanthropists". Inspired by her first foray into motherhood in June of 2001, Lily opened a baby-oriented home furnishings business, Mill Valley Baby & Kids in July of 2002. In 2004, Lily met Serena inside Mill Valley Baby & Kids, and they partnered and launched Serena & Lily. Karen Behnke, Founder, Juice Beauty Karen Behnke has enjoyed a long and successful entrepreneurial career in the Healthy Lifestyles sector of business. Her consistent goal is to equally marry her passion for helping people enjoy healthier lifestyles with her skill at building financially successful businesses that are mission driven.
