Smart Cities in India: the opportunities for business
India is urbanising at an unprecedented rate. Official estimates suggest nearly 600 million of Indians will be living in cities by 2030, up from 290 million in the 2001 census. A McKinsey Global Institute study estimated that cities would generate 70% of the new jobs created by 2030, and produce more than 70% of the Indian gross domestic product. The Indian government is encouraging the formation of a number of "Smart Cities". The first 20 have been announced. The combined opportunity for all the Smart Cities is expected to exceed £20 billion. The Smart Cities Council describes them as cities that leverage data gathered from smart sensors through a smart grid to create a city that is liveable, workable and sustainable. SMART CITIES will have better facilities, better connectivity and better environment, focusing on power, energy, transport, technology, green building, network & communication technology, etc. Much of the funding for smart cities will come from private developers and from abroad. To be successful SMART CITIES will require modern infrastructure, a welcoming environment for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India, and enthusiasm from the real estate, construction and supply chain industries. Smart Cities will represent many £millions of contract opportunities for serious companies from these sectors in UK and Europe. Strong partnerships with Indian companies will be critical for UK and European companies, in realising the potential of India's smart cities. Issues such as what supporting interventions and investments are required, areas where the private sector can come in, and what legal frameworks will be needed must be addressed. Competitive bidding is necessary to ensure competition for the market and thus value for money, besides ensuring transparency. Business India forum is organising a conference in London to discuss the main aspects of what will make a City smart. This conclave is for senior decision makers from the Government & private sector to learn from and share experience and make partner from Europe and India. *Hear directly from public and private sector decision-makers in India, on the exact nature of the opportunities for UK companies. *Meet senior corporate decision makers from India, hungry for new technology and the UK. *Spend time with potential partners during pre-arranged 1:1 meetings.
