Affiliate Marketing 101 - Basic Vocabulary - Part 2

So, you are interested in using your computer to make money on the Internet through affiliate marketing. Congratulations! Affiliate marketing is a fascinating area and it can be incredibly rewarding. However, it may also be incredibly confusing. Even if you encounter some words may make you think you are reading a foreign language. The following is a brief summary of some of the words you need to know. This article is the second in a series of articles on affiliate marketing vocabulary.

Let's continue our discussion and look at some terms about setting up and running websites.

Many affiliate marketers market through one or more websites. Of course, these websites need names, so let's start here.

You may be considering the "site" name. When I started learning all of these things, so did I. But here are some different Internet vocabulary. We do not say "site name" but "domain name". This is just another term for the website name.

So sometimes you see the word "site name" and sometimes you see "domain name". Either way, it is the name of the address and space that your site occupies on the Internet. Just like buying a house, you cannot use this address unless you live in the house. Your website will be "live" in your domain name and its "address" will be your domain name.

Domain names and websites actually have three aspects: registration, hosting and construction.

When you "register" your chosen domain name you are claiming for yourself. There are many domain name registration services available. If you haven't already liked the content, just visit Google and search for "domain registration service". Review some of them and see what suits your needs best.

Find your preferred domain name by following the instructions in your chosen registration service. Then register your chosen domain name. To "register" your chosen domain name, you need to provide contact information and payment for your domain name.

Once you register your chosen name, no one else can claim it. A little bit. When you register a domain name, you need to select a time period - six months, a year, etc. Different domain registration services offer different registration deadlines and costs. If you want to keep the domain name you choose, be sure to pay before the renewal fee expires (a bit like paying the rent before you are kicked out!).

So what is the site "Hosting?"

Let us quickly pick up. In fact, registering your domain is more like an email than a house. You have an address, but you certainly can't enter the post office box!

Your website also needs a good place to live. Unless you are a very accomplished web developer and have a lot of computer expertise, your website will almost certainly "live" on someone else's computer. Of course, that "other's computer" is not really called that. It is called a server. The server is just a very large and fast computer. On this computer, someone basically rents space for the site and keeps the site up and running. This service is called "hosting."

This is important - it is definitely not the time to look for free or ultra-cheap services. When you usually get what you pay for, this is really one of life's. You can find almost nothing to host your website's service - even free! Have you ever heard such an expression: "A penny, a penny, a pound stupid?" It came from the British money system, reflecting a very careful person who spent money, but accidentally spent the pound (similar to the US dollar). In my experience, this expression clearly applies to choosing your hosting service.

If you are not yet familiar with various hosting services, please come back to Google! This time, search for "website hosting service." You will find many companies like your business. Again, read and compare different services to see what looks best for you.

You don't need to commit to hosting services before deciding who will build your site and how they will do it. This is a major decision that involves many of the considerations that will be discussed in another article.

Indeed, there is a lot to know about starting an affiliate marketing website, but it is entirely feasible - even if you are a new candidate for the Internet business world. You only need to approach it one step at a time and make sure that you have understood and completed each step.
