Digital Detox – it is not just a personal issue

Digital Detox – it is not just a personal issue
There are no answers yet about how to live and act in the digital age. We are all finding our virtual feet in a world where everything is changing. No stable social codes exist, even the laws are fluid, so we all lack guidance when it comes to how to be and how to lead. Partners in Digital Human Catherine Stagg-Macey and Marc Dowd - invite you to the first in a series of Thinking Spaces we are bringing together some of the brightest minds to discuss the way in which we should confront the issues thrown up by the Digital environment.  This first Thinking Space is dedicated to Digital Detox from a leadership perspective. As leaders we have to motivate our people to be productive. And yet we also hear and feel the tension of being always connected to work. The societal and corporate costs of getting this wrong are high and already apparent. Digital overload causes stress, absenteeism, and … As leaders within organisations, we believe we have a responsibility to tackle this challenge. What you will get from joining our Thinking Space is authentic discussion of issues around the topic of Digital Detox such as: When our work and private lives collide who do we become? The issues of working and living with the overflows of information. Strategies for prioritization - should these be left to the individual in the corporate context? Bring your creativity and experience to this group and share freely. This is not a presentation. We will be talking about the you and how you shape the world you inhabit. Bring your opinions and your questions. This space is designed to facilitate deep thinking and ideas will spark each other. Change the way you live. Inform the way you lead. Coffee, tea and biscuits will be provided "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead  FAQ What do you mean about being a digital human? We all live in a world where a lot of our time is focused into the digital realm. We produce digital material and we consume digital material at an increasing rate. This impacts on the non-digital elements of our lives: or relationships and our pursuits that are not screen based. As we become more digital what do we lose and what do we gain? What about us changes? What is a thinking space? We believe that we all hold important perspectives on the topic we want to discuss - we are all digital humans after all. In order to approach the topic and learn from each other we will borrow a structure from Nancy Kline: The most valuable thing we can offer each other is the framework in which to think for ourselves. The quality of our thinking depends on the way we treat each other while we are thinking. The ten components that generate the finest thinking are: Attention, Equality, Ease, Appreciation, Encouragement, Feelings, Information, Diversity, Incisive Questions, Place. That is the framework for a Thinking Space. What is not included in a thinking space? There will be no presentations, or traditional experts in the room. We will share our perspectives and learn from each other because this is a new area and there are not experts. Why do you guys care about this? Because we are focused every day on how to make businesses work better we have a huge interest in all elements that contribute to the success or failure of enterprises. The most variable component is human. We care about becoming digital humans because it should be a conscious effort to be better than we were before - not a set of unconscious habits and moral codes that we fall into by accident. Businesses are not the amorphous entities they sometimes appear to be. The culture of a business can be created. We have a duty to create the culture to sustain the best of being digital humans, to do that we have to think about it. You call this a series of thinking spaces. What might we expect in the future? In future sessions we will include topics such as Valuing the person in the Digital World, Digital Ethics and Restructuring Digital work.
