When your home gets flooded, it can be extremely devastating. Everything you own is completely gone. Many people are glad to escape with their lives but cry because of their loss. Despite this, they know they have to continue on living and get started on the major cleanup task that is ahead of them. However, where do you start on flood damage cleanup?
You know that flood damage cleanup is going to be a daunting task. Where do you start? If you are struggling to recover and get started on the flood damage cleanup, here are some tips to help you out in the kitchen.
First, stop looking at your home as a whole. Separate the house into sections. Why do this? If you divide the home up, it doesn't seem as daunting. It's a trick you can play on your mind. Now, pick a room you are ready to begin the flood damage cleanup on.
Second, call your insurance agency to find out if your home is covered. For those who live in flood prone areas, having flood insurance is a must. While it cost more, it's definitely a necessity. Your insurance premiums may be higher but it is well worth having it if you are dealing with flood damage. If your insurance covers the damage, take pictures and document damages for the adjuster as you begin the flood damage cleanup.
Third, it's time to get rid of the mud the water left behind. Using a shovel, you can scoop the mud out. Or use a water hose to get rid of the mud on surfaces that cannot be used on with the shovel. Remember the mud came from the river or ocean water that came in. Try not to touch it with bare hands if it can be helped.
Fourth, be sure you throw out any foods that have been touched by floodwaters. If you have canned goods, you may be able to save the food by submerging the tightly sealed container in water and bleach for about five minutes.
Fifth, it's likely your kitchen's appliances (stove, refrigerator, deep freezer) were submerged in the floodwaters as well. If this is the case, then as part of the flood damage cleanup, get rid of those appliances. Appliances contain insulation and can be hard to reach. This insulation will dry out slowly and could possibly allow mold to grow on it. For the safety of your health, it's best to do away with of them and get new appliances after you are done with the cleanup.
Sixth, you don't have to throw away your utensils. By cleaning and disinfecting them, you can use them once again.
Seventh, silverware will need to be boiled. Using bleach on silverware can tarnish it. Make sure to throw out any cookware that has been damaged. Clean these in hot soapy water before you use them again.
If you are unsure about anything regarding your kitchen including foods or appliances as you are conducting your flood damage cleanup, you can contact your local health department.
Flood damage cleanup is a brutal task. However, by taking it one step at a time, you can move past the tragedy and begin the long tedious task of recovery.
